Landslide Early Warning Systems: Resources or Problems?

چکیده

Recent estimates suggest that landslides occur in about 17.1% of the landmasses, 8.2% global population live landslide prone areas, and exposure to is expected increase. It threfore not surprising early warning gaining attention scientific technical literature, among decision makers. Thanks important technological advancements, prediction are now possible, systems (LEWSs) becoming valuable resources for risk mitigation. A review geographical LEWSs examined 26 regional, national 44.5-year period from January 1977 June 2019. The study relevaled only five nations, 13 regions, four metropolitan areas benefited operational LEWSs, large where high lack LEWS coverage. also revealed rate deployment has increased recent years, but remains low, reniewed efforts needed accelerate LEWSs. Building on review, recommendations further development improvement proposed. cover six including design, deployment, operation LEWS; collection analysis rainfall data used operate, validate LEWSs; forecast models advisories evaluation performance assessment; management; communication dissemination. complex multi-faceted require care their implementation operation. To avoid failures can lead loss credibility liability consequences, it critical community scientists professionals who implement operate takes all necessary precautions, guided by rigorous practices.

Web3DGIS-Based System for Reservoir Landslide Monitoring and Early Warning

Landslides are the most frequent type of natural disaster, and they bring about large-scale damage and are a threat to human lives and infrastructure; therefore, the ability to conduct real-time monitoring and early warning is important. In this study, a Web3DGIS (Web3D geographic information systems) system for monitoring and forecasting landslides was developed using the Danjiangkou Reservoir...

An Early Warning System for Regional Rain-Induced Landslide Hazard

Landslide in alpine regions often causes heavy losses of both human lives and properties, most of the landslides are induced by heavy rainfall. In this paper, we put forward an early warning system of rain-induced landslide. From 2002, we carried on the demonstrative work of landslide monitoring and early warning in Yaan, Sichuan Province, China, and constructed the first county-scale landslide...

Classification of Landslide Susceptibility in the Development of Early Warning Systems

Statistical classification techniques complemented by GIS yield good results in predicting landslide hazard/ susceptibility. In this work, several well-known classification methods are applied to data from distinct alpine areas in Vorarlberg, Austria. It is shown that kernel methods (Support Vector Machines – SVM – and Gaussian Processes) outperform classic techniques for this task. As a furthe...

WG Early Warning Systems

Early Warning Systems aim at detecting unclassified but potentially harmful system behavior based on preliminary indications and are complementary to Intrusion Detection Systems. Both kinds of systems try to detect, identify and react before possible damage occurs and contribute to an integrated and aggregated situation report (big picture). A particular emphasis of Early Warning Systems is to ...
